Mindru Katz, a child prodigy whose playing was often compared to that of Vladimir Horowitz, defected from Romania to England and then Israel in 1959. The Romanian gov’t responded by destroying the tapes of his many recordings and radio broadcasts. He went on to perform in 40 counties, dying on stage in 1978 at age 52 while performing Beethoven’s Tempest sonata in a recital in Istanbul. Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood were composed in 1838; he selected the 13 published from 30 composed to illustrate his adult reminiscences of childhood. The titles describe the music. The first mvm’t of Schumann’s Fantasie was composed to express his distress at being separated from Clara Wieck, his future wife. The theme is taken from a Beethoven song cycle, “To the Distant Beloved.” The last two mvm’ts were composed to create a work intended to help raise funds to erect a monument to Beethoven.
