STEVE COLEMAN & FIVE ELEMENTS: The Mancy of Sound Pi, 2011 AVANT-GARDE – Sax adventurer Coleman continues his experiments in employing abstract vocals (Jen Shyu) against densely layered horns, while applying concepts of astrology and other divination systems to his music in ways I don’t pretend to understand. Coleman has a top band with two drummers on hand, allowing rhythm to take a foreground position (especially in the suite, tracks 3-6). It can be a bit difficult to approach at times, but overall I find this more cohesive and successful than 2010’s Harvesting Semblances and Affinities. Steve Coleman : alto sax Jonathan Finlayson : trumpet Tim Albright : trombone Jen Shyu : voice Thomas Morgan : bass Tyshawn Sorey, Marcus Gilmore : drums Ramon Garcia Perez : percussion Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 1. 6:41 – heavy rhythm, jumbled horn/vocal fragments; sax solo burns through 2. 7:05 – meandering but excellent horn interplay with scatlike vocal syllables 3. 5:21 – complex afro-caribbean rhythm, percolating horns & sing-song vocal 4. 6:15 – slower patterns, slouching horns in close formation, male Yoruba vox 5. 6:36 – upbeat jumble; horn solos and vocals rise from the bubbling rhythm 6. 7:59 – the most melodic track: relaxed, complex flow, spoken interjections 7. 6:56 – horns & vocal only; relaxed wandering, picks up rhythmic focus later 8. 12:20 – a sort of abstracted latin jam, complicated interactions & nice solos [ Fo ] - August 2011 |
