MUSIC OF POUL RUDERS, VOL. 6: Piano Concerto No. 2; Bel Canto; Serenade on the Shores of the Cosmic Ocean.
Bridge Records: 2011

Poul Ruders (b. 1949), a Danish composer whose works are performed often both in and outside of Denmark, is fascinated by death, loneliness and melancholy. His Piano Concerto No. 2, composed 2009-10 for Vasily Primakov (who plays it here), emphasizes grand gestures in a neoclassic style. The tonality is brusque but pleasurable. The Bel Canto for solo violin is a beautiful, mournful work evoking loneliness. The Serenade on the Shores of the Cosmic Ocean, for accordion and string quartet, was inspired by Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos.” The strings and accordion play off each other’s timbres through glissandi, tone clusters and “otherworldly” pulsations.

1. [9:35] Piano Concerto No. 2. I. Fluente. Gentle opening, then biting, percussive piano accompanied by orchestra, lyrical → jagged, with animated cadenza.
2. [9:40] II. Semplice begins with simple line → jagged outbursts, devolving to softness and simplicity
3. [4:38] III. Avanti Risoluto. A “crazy rondo” virtuosic, jazzy, breathless.
4. [6:21] Bel Canto for solo violin. Beautiful, but with dissonant double-stopping (e.g., minor seconds), hymn-like and folk-like tunes.
5. [3:10] Serenade . . . Ocean. I. Introduction (Presto). Dissonant tone clusters, dynamic extremes, swooping glissandi.
6. [6:06] Serenade . . . Ocean. II. Adagio. Gentle diatonic simplicity.
7. [2:43]. Serenade . . . Ocean. III. Prestissimo. Rapid winds blow.
8. [2:48] Serenade . . . Ocean. IV. Backbone of the Night. Sparse textures and jabbing note repetitions.
9. [2:07] Serenade . . . Ocean. V. Stardust (Rubato). Hint of a bittersweet waltz.
10. [7:22] Serenade . . . Ocean. VI. Threnos. A lament; slow melody.
11. [4:12] Serenade . . . Ocean. VII Dream Catcher. Diatonic, tuneful
12. [2:17] Serenade . . . Ocean. VIII. Heart of Darkness. A furious cadenza in chord clusters.
13. [1:58] Serenade . . . Ocean. IX. Finale: Blinded by the Light. Accelerating, rising figuration leads to a wild fanfare of shining dissonance.
