Peter Novelli gathers some legendary musicians including Dr. John, Augie Meyers (Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados, John Hammond, Bob Dylan), and for the tribute to Slim Harpo (tracks 12-16) Raful Neal (Slim Harpo), James Johnson and “Big” Johnny Thomassie. This album is bluesy, zydeco, rockin’. Featuring Novelli on the guitar and vocals, along with bass, drums, piano, accordion, horns, organs, etc. There’s some great stuff here. No FCC’s.

*My Favorites*: 2, 3, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15.

1. (4:54) Mid. INSTRUMENTAL. Plodding beat, drum and guitar heavy.
2. *(5:56) Mid. Story-song, Blues with a Latin flair with shaker and castanets. Nice harmonica, female backing vocals.
3. *(5:33) Mid. Inspired by Louisiana’s musical heritage, features accordion and frottoir (washboard), jawharp. Bluesy with a steady rolling beat. Good stuff. About 7 seconds of silence at end.
4. (4:24) Mid. Plodding beat, backing vocals. Straight ahead rockin’ bluesy with a hint of The Allman Brothers.
5. (3:00) Slow. INSTRUMENTAL. Jawharp and synth lend an ominous, airy feel.
6. (3:56) Mid. Slower, steady beat, backing vocals, shakers.
7. *(4:49) Slow. Featuring Dr. John on piano, song about post-Katrina. Nice, mellow guitar and piano solos.
8. (5:02) Mid. Funky groover with cool bass lines. Horns, plodding beat, backing vocals.
9. *(6:00) Slow / Mid. INSTRUMENTAL. A late night, mellow, jazzy jam. Swirling organ, horns, nice guitar.
10. (6:44) Mid. Easy-going song, cool percussion, subdued guitar, harmonica near the end.
11. *(4:52) Mid. INSTRUMENTAL. Featuring Augie Meyers on the Vox organ. Zydeco flair with the organ, accordion and frottoir. It’s Killer.
12. *(5:30) Mid. Featuring Dr. John on piano and James Johnson on guitar solo 3. It’s a rockin’ Louisiana song.
13. (2:53) James Johnson talking about ‘Scratch My Back’, written with Slim Harpo.
14. (2:02) Raful Neal talking about Slim Harpo and ‘Scratch My Back’ while he plays guitar.
15. *(4:43) Mid. Featuring Raful Neal on harmonica, Augie Meyers on Vox organ and James Johnson on guitar solo 1 and 2. Steady rollin’ song, really cool.
16. (1:54) “Big” Johnny Thomassie talking about New Orleans drumming.
