CHAUSSON - CONCERT; MATHIEU – TRIO & QUINTETTE (Aláin Lefèvre, David Lefèvre, Quartuor Alcan)

André Mathieu (1929-1968) was called “the Canadian Mozart.” His music was said to be about “clarity,” of rhythm, harmony and supple melodies. The Piano Trio opens with a dreamlike Andante, the piano in tender dialogue with the violin and cello. One is reminded of Debussy - bitonal chords, whole-tone and pentatonic scales, unprepared modulations, but all pleasing to the ear. A second Andante, marked by plaintive melody, leads to the flamboyant and passionate Allegro con fuoco. The Quintette alternates powerful drama and naïve charm. Ernst Chausson’s (1855-1899) Concert is akin to a concerto for piano and violin with a string quartet background. The three-note motif of the first mvmt becomes sumptuous. The Sicilienne contains two lovely melodies – one can see the sun setting over an agitated sea. The Grave, sinking into the earth, is deeply moving. The Finale offers dramatic and lyrical piano melodies, gigue rhythm and effervescent effects.

Mathieu: Trio (Violin, Cello, Piano). Andante. 6:48
Mathieu: Trio (Violin, Cello, Piano). Andante, Allegro. 9:51
Mathieu: Quintette (Piano, Strings). Allegro. 7:47. Surging string melodies against bitonal piano chords and arpeggios
Mathieu: Quintette (Piano, Strings). Allegro Con Fuco. 9:35. Serious, even stern tones → drama, then reflection, all richly melodic and varying harmonically between impressionistic and diatonic style.
Chausson. Concert (violin, piano, quartet). Décidé. 16:05
Chausson. Concert (Violin, Piano, Quartet). Sicilienne. 4:56
