SLUMGUM: Quardboard Flavored Fiber Accretions, 2011 MODERN JAZZ – This elusive quartet is not afraid to take risks. They have a vibrant, gripping core sound that rises from a sort of urban moodiness, but they also flirt with free improv on several tracks and get into a bit of crunchy jazz-rock in #2. The odd-numbered tracks are variations on a single melody, with varying levels of abstraction. Jon Armstrong : tenor sax & clarinet Rory Cowal : piano & rhodes Dave Tranchina : bass Trevor Anderies : drums Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6… 10 if you’re up for it 1. 3:12 – sparse and cerebral, comes together in a brief surge, falls away 2. 5:08 – relaxed, off-kilter with Rhodes keyboard & cool rhythm, turns grungy 3. 2:52 – sax & piano wander over Afro-Caribbean rhythm, insistent improv 4. 9:08 – starts easy, speeds up under edgy sax, spins; neat rhodes/drum duo 5. 2:30 – very quiet, slow: moody sax, bright piano chords & tiptoe bass 6. 6:34 – mopey ballad: band comes in gradually, crests in center, then glides 7. 2:34 – very slow and deep, bass front and center, stretches upwards 8. 7:30 – spiky, stabbing theme gradually overcome by gently-flowing freedom 9. 3:16 – starts calm but dark, becomes agitated with creaky bass improv 10. 9:30 – vague, highly slippery stuff: good sax & bass solos, flies free at end 11. 4:04 – sloooow, emerges from silence, harsh bowed bass pulls it out [ Fo ] - August 2011 |
