MORDECAI SHEHORI PALYS ZEZ CONGREY’S “KITTEN ON THE KEYS,” “DIZZY FINGERS,” AND 26 ADDITIONAL PIANO NOVELTIES

Zez Confrey participated with George Gershwin in the famous 1924 Paul Whiteman Orchestra premier of Rhapsody in Blue. Confrey used Ragtime as his starting point, but his pieces are each unique portraits. The image behind Kitten on the Keys is clear, as is the speedy mouse in Mouse’s Hooves, and the virtuoso pianist in Dizzy Fingers. Whimsical mechanical entities are portrayed in Grandfather’s Clock, Tap Dance of the Chimes, Nickel in the Slot and Rag Doll Dimples. Lullaby from Mars conjures up menacing little green men, Greenwich Witch a dangerous hussy, and feelings of tenderness and longing break out in Meandering, Anticipation, Wistfulness and Time for Mademoiselle. Musical parodies appear in Humorestless after Dvorák’s Humoresque, and Spring Song after Mendelssohn. Mighty Lackawanna is tranquil, Sparkling Water elegant, and Valse Mirage exotic, while Champagne truly bubbles. Rhythm Venture is a syncopated Bacchanalia, and Charleston Chuckles energetic. Stumbling evokes early ice-skating attempts, and Movie Ballet graceful choreography. You Tell’Em, Ivories is whimsical.
