Experimental, dark rock sprawl. Haunted House is the collaborative, abstract interpretation of a free blues band by guitar legend Loren Mazzacane Connors, guitarist Andrew Burnes, and percussionist Neel Burgai. The group disbanded a decade ago and recently reformed with Suzanne Langille (Connors’ wife, who provides beautifully frightening and howling vocals) to record a successor to 1999’s Up in Flames. Droning, distorted guitars, a heavy drum thud, and noisy, angular guitar psychedelia round out the sound. We’re fortunate Northern Spy sent us this immensely dark album because it’s phenomenal. For fans of Evangelista, Loren Connors, Constellation Records, Alan Licht, Colin Stetson.

Note: Haunted House is not to be confused with the “indie rock” “Haunted House,” comprised of sidekicks from Andrew Bird’s touring band and the like.

1. Heavy, distorted, dark screeching and reeling guitars build with propulsive, percussive march and Langille’s howl. (9:57)
*2. Whispery vocals, driving rhythm, trippy delayed guitar effects. Disorienting bad trip and you’re trapped and the walls are caving in. (12:29)
*3. Free percussion, dreamy, slow, sad guitar twangs and strums; it just kills me. (3:42)
*4. Sooo dark, thunderous, and snarling. (9:13)
5. Two-chord instrumental with melodic guitar feedback. (3:06)
