Timeless Pulse - Trio

An avant-jazz trio is here to kindly remind you that music can exist without logical melodic and rhythmic forms—at its most basic, it’s SOUND. So just what can sound do once unshackled by all compositional conventions? Their answer comes in the form of meditative bells and gongs emitting gorgeous, shimmering vibrations, and bleating, atonal accordion + percussion improvisation. Parts of this double-album sound as if KFJC static was being re-interpreted with acoustic instruments. Recommended for fans of Sun Ra, resonating glass, Marcel Duchamp , the sound of wind blowing through foliage, and the tortured souls of dead accordions.

*A note re: individual tracks—the band has generously provided summaries of each track on the inner cover, but if you’re on the air now and can’t spare the time to read their meticulous and verbose notes, read the more concise review below. But trust me, the liner notes are delightfully bizarre, so I recommend reading them sometime, especially if you are a fan of: kittens, bunnies, zen meditation, astronomy, brainwave cycles.

A1. Calm, sparse, droning bells and gongs.
A2. Dissonant, absurd babbling trio: accordion + glass marimba (!) + drums
A3. Another trio improv sesh, but this time they sound like they’re falling asleep.
A4. Blatantly atonal free-jazz meanderings, still managing to sound upbeat and cheerful.
B1. The first of two homages to drummer Max Roach. Still avant-garde, but with a more pronounced jazz influence in the drums.
B2. The avant-garde jazz musicians are suddenly abducted by aliens and replaced with mental patients on the same instruments.
B3. Chilled-out gong sesh
B4. Just in case you ever thought this record was going to start making sense…
B5. …it’s not. (gong duet)
C1. Cavernous resonances of droning gongs and bells
C2. Weird meandering polka from another dimension with “spoken word accompaniment” (some weird lady rambling a random assortment of phrases)
C3. “…an even more abstract free piece in the spirit of Max Roach”—liner notes
D1. Bizarre, screeching polka-jazz from hell.
D2. More gong meditation, this time trading bits of melody with the glass marimba.
D3. “this piece reminds us of a kitten exploring new territory”—liner notes
D4. Even more surreal free-weirdness with the addition of sequenced drum overdubs
