Beats Antique / Elektrafone / Self Release / 2011

Local Bay Area band, self released at Big Cactus Studio (Oakland) & Prairie Sun Studios (Sebastopol).
Epic electronica, definitely fit for movies (a modern Odysseus would shake to this). Up beat synths with an array of instruments (along with many guests on mandolin, sax, bass, viola, trumpets, banjo, accordion, saw, trombone, and more). Gets you pumped.
Each member of the trio (David Satori, Sidecar Tommy, and Zoe Jakes) switches around instruments, from bass, violin, percussion, keys, composition, etc. taking old exotic styles such as middle eastern bellydance, jazz, tribal music, and Indian classical, thrown into an electric blender with modern times.
If you like instrumental electronica, with a truly epic touch to it, then this is for you.
Similar to Nightmares on Wax.
FCC Clean. Favorites - #2, #5, & #7

1: “Cat Skillz” (5:29) - Epic eruptions of high-tempo synths and electronic sounds
2*: “The Porch” (4:07) - Nice exotic mandolin with some banjo, along with the electro beat that gives a good feel for an ambitious walk through the underground city
3: “Alto” (4:17) - Attempted Palo Alto theme song? Perhaps. Has a Coder’s touch to it. Jumpy with electric orchestra sounds. The guest trumpets and trombones are nice.
4: “Siren Song” (4:46) - String instruments! Fantasia took a turn in some eastern european nightclub with a arabic theme.
5*: “Skytalk” (4:12) - Worldy and great. Violin, viola, guitar, mandolin, etc. Easy listen, almost like NYC meets the Ottoman Empire.
6: “Snarl Axe” (4:08) - This one is jittery. Electronica with some programming and percussion up-beat in the background, mid-tempo keys in the fore. Dub base in the back. Has epic eruptions.
7*: “Uneven” (5:57) - Again with the worldy touch, good mandolin. Really well put together, lots of mixing.
8: “Alleyway” (4:28) - Harder electronica than the rest. Dubby, some trombone and other guests, lots of mixing. Guest - ill Gates
9: “Swagger” (4:51) - The name is cheezy, but the tune is neat. Lots of strings, with trumpets/trombone, again a mix of western synths and eastern instrumentals. Accordion! The Tailor as guest.
10: “We Swarm” (5:57) (by Glitch Mob)- REMIX by Beats Antique. Fast and hard, with strong electronica mixing. Keys. Less exotic instruments, still very epic (definitely fit for an action film).
