Primus – Green Naugahyde Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/24/11 Primus. If I have to describe Primus (which I really can’t, although I started watching them when they started playing), then you wouldn’t understand… Goodly weird and weirdly good. FCCs (singular, and pretty easy to miss, but there) on 9, 11 and 12. I like 2, 4 and 8 best. So there. 1. 1:20 *slow fade-in of sort of motor noise, then woobly processed vocals, rather pretty bits of guitar. Leads in to the next track, but why bother? Go directly to: 2. 3:59 ****signature bippity boppity bass, funky beat, Residents-like vocals. I can’t tell what he’s talking about, but who cares? It sounds terrific. Gets very grunty and wumbly. 3. 6:15 ***jaunty little march with disturbingly pretty vocals – I would suspect impending heck. Screechy guitar solo, fun riffs, sad story. 4. 2:45 ****very cool percussion, hyperactive oompah, demented circus feel. There’s definitely a statement here, but it’s utterly nutted. I like it. 5. 4:52 ***slightly exotic feel to the intro, then back to poppily bop bass, a little bit of disco in the chorus. 6. 5:32 ***weird little backmasked-sounding riff, then downtempo funky march with impossible bass. Goes all whacked out to noodles and feedback (just because I said that doesn’t mean I want to think about it) a couple of minutes or so from end. 7. 6:37 ***slow fade-in of reverby weirdness for first minute, then pretty plinky guitar and big growly stuff, almost whispered vocals – disturbing, as well it should be. Ominous, jangly, creepy – but great. 8. 3:28 ****jaunty boppy, bassy, C&W rave-up – and who doesn’t wanna be like Lee Van Cleef? I’m glad he’s being fittingly memorialized. Thanks, Primus! 9. 4:38 FCC: “asshole” ***weebly jangly tremble and poppy bass, slow and freaky. Totally true, though. 10. 2:03 **slow, nice drum riff, no real bottom end – very psychedelic, almost late-Beatles-y. Almost painfully sawed bass. 10 seconds silence at end. 11. 2:59 FCC: “shove it up your ass” ***big electric guitar, downtempo funky stomp, smarmy vocals. 12. 5:20 Barely discernable FCC: “shit” ***fade in to indecipherable chant and opera, then hyperactive bass and syncopation. Ends with almost 20 seconds of woobly fishtank filter or something. 13. 0:58 **jaunty, circus-y reprise of chorus to track 3, no drums. |
