RALPH CARNEY’S SERIOUS JASS PROJECT: Seriously
Smog Veil, 2011

SWING – Second disc from this gleefully goofy Bay Area quartet. Best known for Tin Huey and his work with Tom Waits, Carney is a master of pretty much any instrument you can blow into and a few that you can’t, and he single-handedly becomes a full horn section in these overlooked gems from the 1920s-1940s (including several from the Duke Ellington songbook). Mostly instrumental stuff, but the brief vocals are fun too. Everybody’s having a good time, and so will you.

1. 3:00 – hot & jumpin’ with squealin’ saxes, lap steel, goofball scat vocals
2. 2:49 – happy theme song with an exotic twist: sax blows hot and cool
3. 4:35 – excellent Ellington creep with nicely slurred sax & trumpet solos
4. 2:55 – upbeat and super-happy: horns & flute bounce, fun vocals
5. 2:26 – jump blues/boogie bounce, love the deep sax backing
6. 2:51 – laid-back Ellington: really nice melody for clarinet & gruff saxes
7. 3:42 – snappy tune: saloon piano, hot sax & clarinets, oddball vocal duet
8. 4:42 – relaxed but really screwy: playful piano and silly group vocal
9. 2:24 – merry little bounce chugs along, wordless vocal section
10. 3:48 – laid-back but breezy 1920s tune: nice arrangement, rough vocal
11. 3:03 – chunky, good-time bounce: clarinet is all over it, nice drums
12. 4:35 – oddball group improvisation, free-jazz with a dose of humor
