GROSSMAN & VLATKOVITCH: Call & Response & Friends pfMENTUM, 2011 POETRY/FREE JAZZ – It’s a simple formula: Dottie Grossman reads her very short, deadpan poems, there’s a moment’s pause, then a trio led by trombonist Michael Vlatkovitch improvises an equally brief instrumental response. Many of the poems have a subtle, even obscure sense of humor (several are inspired by comedian Henny Youngman, “king of the one-liners”), but there’s a good deal of variety here: some are observations of daily life, others snippets of memory, a few filled with yearning, and the music puts an unexpected spin on most. 34 tracks, most under 2 minutes long. All FCC clean. Fo’s Picks: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 20, 22, 30, 31, 33 [ Fo ] - October 2011 |
