MC Dizzy Jackson Reviewed 2011-11-26 | ||
Frenchman Jean-Claude Vannier has been making music since the late ’60’s. He has done both film and television scores and this release is a collection of rare and unreleased instrumental works taken from the late ’60’s / early ’70’s. Vannier is a contemporary of singer / songwriter legend Serge Gainsbourg, with whom he collaborated with on the 1971 release Historie de Melody Nelson. Lots of instrumentation here including drums, sax, flute, keys, tuba, guitar, bass, etc. Fantastic stuff. No FCC’s. *My Favorites*: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11. 1. (2:17) Mid. Bagpipes, piano swirling, ominous, dark and delicious. 2. *(2:03) Fast. Big bass drum pounding, wailing sax, tambourine, flute. Jungle flavorings. Killer. 3. *(2:28) Slow / Mid. Lo-fi-ish, retro ’70’s film score-like. Guitar, bass, flute, drums. Velvety coolness. 4. (1:33) Slow / Mid. Percussion a-plenty with tuba, flute. Film-noir. 5. *(1:52) Mid. Toy piano? Glockenspiel? something childish and fun. Plodding beat, a bit dark and mysterious. Eastern Euro flair. 6. (1:18) Slow / Mid. Plucked strings, marimba, horn. Short, sweet and sparse. 7. *(1:58) Mid. Carnival time, almost Mexicali. Plodding beat, some key instrument? with an insane quick finish. 8. (0:55) Slow. Intro of voices, then a short, classical filmic piece. 9. *(1:51) Mid. Dreamy, psychic with lots going on: flute, drums, bass, cello? xylophone? Cool. 10. *(1:59) Mid. March with fingersnaps, female vocals, some percussion slide thingy. Very sparse and great. 11. *(2:14) Mid. Upbeat and fun with horn, drums, guitar. 12. (1:18) Mid. ’60’s psyche, with keyboard, drum-driven. 13. (1:39) Mid. Keys, big, big tuba? French horn? Interesting mix. 14. (1:06) MId. Reprise of song #1, swirling piano and bagpipes. |
