Berkeley based singer/songwriter/guitarist Chelsea Coleman’s debut EP is a likeable record, ranging stylistically from bright country-pop to spare folk. Her voice is a strong pop mezzo with just a hint of country (like, say, Mary Chapin Carpenter or Sheryl Crow). The songwriting here is very good: pretty on the outside, thoughtful & sad on the inside.

No FCC issues.

1 ** Mid-tempo. Strummed 12-string, spooky lap steel. She’s thinking about leavin’. (4:16)

2 ** Slow beautiful ballad. Starts with just voice and finger-style acoustic; a full band joins: piano, bass, drums. She’s thinking about what it’ll be like after leaving. (4:52)

3 * Slow lullaby. Lovely, sad melody. She sings two voice tracks, backed by guitar, plus a gentle upright bass and drums. She’s alone now with just the baby. (5:11)

4 ** Very slow. Like Gillian Welsh might do: Americana feel, acoustic guitars, male harmony. A young woman anticipates her future with resignation and determination. (5:25)

5 *** Up-tempo for once. Country pop with a catchy tune, an especially strong vocal, and band accompaniment. She’s decided to remain unattached. (4:21)

6 *** Mid-tempo. Beautiful, well-sung folk song. Hints of rain include a melodic sample of “it’s raining, it’s pouring” and guitar picking that suggests Dylan’s “Buckets of Rain.” A sad cello accompanies. She’s sad and hurt, but still holding her head up and persevering. (5:22)
