Finders Keepers Records does it again, this time with the first ever issue of Zdenek Liska's original orchestral/electronic score to 'Malá Morská Víla' from 1976, a Czech film adaptation of Hans C. Anderson's 'The Little Mermaid'. Though the label is no stranger to obscuro-oddities, they themselves describe this as “one of the most idiosyncratic and haunting undiscovered scores in the annals of European cinematic history.” Yup. Chilling, evocative, psychedelic... not your Disney “Little Mermaid,” I promise. Overall, an eccentric and orchestral listen, rife with cinematic string arrangements, brass and woodwind highlights, and deep, dark early electronic sounds. No idea what to compare it to... like a trippier, ghostlier, Czech-er Bernard Hermann. Check tracks 11, 9, 17, or 7. 01. introductory; overture (4:03) 02. ambient, pulsing percussion (1:29) 03. horse-trot, creepy strings, sound effects … (2:46) 04. deep electronic percussion, chilling female vox (3:38) 05. cool opening treble drone, gives way to nice strings + horns (2:21) 06. chilling choir vox; great interlude (1:19) 07. * cool, schizophrenic electronic sounds a la ‘Forbidden Planet’ (3:11) 08. descending strings + pounding elec. kick drum (1:39) 09. * flute + synth interlude interrupted by Morricone-like strings (1:23) 10. brief cut of more morosely descending strings (0:48) 11. ** extended version of track 9 -- plus female vox! (2:32) 12. weird low-end synth drone + lilting flute melody. more nice strings. (2:05) 13. sounds like instrumental version of track 4 (1:06) 14. more ‘Forbidden Planet’ chirping, whirring, buzzing, sawing (1:31) 15. * creepy female vox over choir background + weird clapping (1:11) 16. walking sound effect (0:11) 17. * carnival-y flute fanfare alternates w/ -- you guessed it -- creepy vox (3:25) 18. sweeping white noise and sound fx highlight pretty string arrangement (2:07) 19. anxious, staccato synth and strings -- what’s going to happen????? (0:31) 20. bird-like synth chirps and whirrs (0:46) 21. machine-like synth fx with brief female vocals at end (1:16) 22. dramatic string interlude! (0:24) 23. multi-sectioned overture … cool to get a taste of the many elements that the rest of the soundtrack consists of (5:58) 24. quick, droney outro (0:21) |
