Emanuel Vardi (1915-2011), one of the greatest violists and an excellent violinist was called “Master of His Instrument” by the N Y Times. He was a member of numerous chamber ensembles and string quartets, and a conductor and a composer of movie scores. He was the only violist, besides Wm. Primrose, to give a solo recital in Carnegie Hall. Odeon Partos (1907-1977) was a Hungarian-Israeli violist and composer, important founder of Israeli musical institutions. Paul Hindemith’s Trauermusik, for viola and orchestra, was written on Jan. 21, 1936 in honor of King George V, who had died the previous night. Its 4 short mvmts mourn and honor. Michael Colgrass began as a jazz percussionist and won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Tibor Serly (1901-1978) was a pupil of Zoltán Kodály, and arranged music of Béla Bartók to make it more accessible. He orchestrated the Broadway hit, Man of La Mancha. William Walton’s Viola Concerto (1929) is considered one of the most difficult in the literature, but is modally melodic and beautifully orchestrated.
