EMERSON STRING QUARTET: MOZART, THE PRUSSIAN QUARTETS (K. 575, 589, 590)
Label: Sony Classical, 2011

Written in 1789-90 after Mozart had visited King FriedrichWilhelm II in Berlin, himself a cellist, these last quartets by Mozart helped the Classical quartet move away from the acoustic primacy of the violin towards equality of all four parts. The cello is a more notable singer here. The quartets were first published just a few weeks after Mozart’s death in 1791. They manifest the elegance, beauty, joy, sorrows and profound wonder we associate with Mozart.

1. (7:45) String Quartet K. 575, Allegretto. A familiar “let’s off to the dance” melody.
2. (4:30) String Quartet K. 575, Andante. Cello to the fore. We pass through quiet, richly decorated rooms of a Baroque palace.
3. (5:29) String Quartet K. 575, Menuetto. Ladies in brocade, men in silk, and champagne in crystal greet our eye. Some are plotting, others dancing.
4. (6:10) String Quartet K. 575, Allegretto. Cello has the main theme. The crowd swirls into the night, horses prance at waiting carriages.
5. (6:38) String Quartet K. 589, Allegro. Instruments playfully exchange melodies. We’re having fun, but also a bit serious at times.
6. (6:23) String Quartet K. 589, Larghetto. Florid, gracious melody.
7. (6:19) String Quartet K. 589, Menuetto. Ceremonial foils flash dramatically, followed by rather serious discussion.
8. (3:56) String Quartet K. 589, Allegro Assai. Light-footed gamboling before the king, but brief darkness before joy returns and all ends well.
9. (8:59) String Quartet K. 590, Allegro Moderato. A discussion of affairs of state over a rich, candlelit dinner in the 20’ x 50’ dining room. We are wealthy, but not free of cares.
10. (7:28) String Quartet K. 590, Andante. Lovely variations. The silver-wigged, gowned ladies step formally and twirl, displaying gentility.
11. (4:06) String Quartet K. 590, Menuetto. Startling sonorities. Talk of former battles won, but with dear comrades lost. Nor is rebuilding easy.
12. (7:02) String Quartet K. 590, Allegro. Complexly contrapuntal. Peasants harvest happily, buzzing about, and the castle is repaired.
