THE PRIDONOFF DUO: VIRTUOSITY SQUARED – MUSIC OF LISZT, KNEHANS, GERSHWIN
Franz Liszt was a leader of the Romantic mvmt, evolving “transformation of themes” as a compositional technique and enriching piano technique and harmonies. The Concerto Pathétique (1865) offers bravado and heroism in its 1st theme, melancholy reflection in its 2nd, and is structured as 4 mvmts in 1: exposition, development, recapitulation, coda, with the 2nd theme repeated before the coda. Contemporary composer Douglas Knehans composed Cascade for the Pridonoffs. The piece has a fast-slow-fast structure, with each mvmt evoking the “glow of piano resonance.” The Fantasy on Porgy and Bess was arranged by pianist Percy Grainger. After an introduction letting us know tragedy is to follow, the familiar tunes (It Ain’t Necessarily So [4:19], Summertime [9:15], Bess, You Is My Woman Now [13:20], I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’[15:50], Leavin’ for the Promis’ Lan’ [18:04]) shimmer by delightfully.
