WILLIAM CARN: Run Stop Run
Mythology, 2011

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ – This Canadian trombonist’s quartet crafts unassuming tunes that blend catchy little grooves, a sense of drifting daydreams and some moments of shapeless ambiance, but also hints of rock. Carn’s trombone has a simple, straightforward sound and guitarist Don Scott turns in some really nice, generally understated solos.

Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 9

1. 1:43 – steady drone
2. 6:22 – odd churning tune: guitar keeps cool, ambient trombone solo
3. 5:13 – quiet hopscotch melody; calm solos over upbeat drums
4. 8:09 – relaxed daydreamy sway over a repeated riff, just drifts and expands
5. 6:36 – more jazzy: upbeat but under wraps, nice trombone & bass solos
6. 5:27 – rockin’ theme with softer breaks; steady trombone, space guitar
7. 1:43 – layered drone with stark tones on top
8. 6:02 – relaxed and wistful: solos gaze into the distance
9. 7:38 – wandering daydream: guitar solo solves puzzles, trombone lifts it up
10. 5:39 – low-key, buoyant feel: solos roll but it’s all a bit dull
11. 6:02 – quietly points to a far-off horizon, strange interplay slowly rises
12. 1:43 – shimmering drone
