PAT MARTINO QUARTET: Undeniable
HighNote, 2011

SOUL-JAZZ/BOP – Hot live date for guitar legend Martino, leading a sharp quartet with the always-bluesy Tony Monaco on Hammond B3 organ, straight-bop saxophonist Eric Alexander and fiery drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. The mix is slightly muddy around the organ, but the music is great: all four guys bring their A-game. Fat and greasy. Play it!

Try any track! Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6

1. 7:38 – quick, snappy groove: guitar mixes it up, sax gets hot, organ rolls
2. 8:32 – relaxed bluesy crawl: long guitar lines, sax spins, too-cool organ
3. 10:00 – blues walk: organ digs in, guitar works a riff, sax calmly tears it up
4. 8:04 – chilly marching groove: nice sax/guitar interplay & awesome solos!
5. 8:45 – laid-back blues standard: organ stomps all over it, guitar digs in
6. 7:52 – standard ballad, quiet & smoky: pretty much all guitar, just perfect
7. 8:11 – easy swing: sax stretches, but guitar wraps it up very neatly
