Cannonneers / Cannonneers (4.5/5)
Alternative/garage rock. First full-length album of the new LA band formed in 2010. The music is straightforward swaggering rock n’ roll with a lot of British influence. Songs have catchy lyrics, addictive riffs, and repeated chorus. Some tracks are upbeat and quick-tempoed while others are more serene and emotional. The instrumentation is pretty standard (twin guitar/bass/drum) without much electronic effect.
Try 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11. FCC for #5.
#1 ** : (3:18) Upbeat, catchy lyrics, simple but addictive riff & chorus, unmistakable guitar solo with wah toward the end. Great opening track!
#2 : (3:29) Upbeat, quick-tempo. Chorus is repeated over and over, perhaps a bit too much
#3 * : (4:17) Mid-tempo. Melancholy Brit pop. Serene chello starts the song and fills background throughout.
#4 ** : (4:54) Mid-tempo. Slightly melancholy emo rock. Interesting muted guitar riff, heavy echo/reverb. Smooth and original development.
#5 ** : (3:13) Upbeat, quick-tempo garage rock. Short-shouting vocal, intoxicating rhythm and guitar riff. FCC “fuckin it up”
#6 ** : (3:00) Upbeat, quick-tempo. Catchy melody & lyrics. Heavy reverb. Slide guitar.
#7 * : (4:00) Upbeat, quick-tempo. Repeated chorus & downstroke guitar backing.
#8 : (4:35) Begins with serene guitar arpeggio. String ensemble background. Builds tempo as song progressesb
#9 : (4:16) Begins with heavy distortion guitar
#10 * : (3:45) Serene and slightly melancholy. String ensemble background.
#11 ** : (4:24) Begins with somebody speaking in the background. Heavy echo/reverb. Somewhat reminiscent of Radiohead’s Pablo Honey.
