ANDREW CYRILLE: Route de Frères
TUM, 2011

WORLD-JAZZ – Very cool stuff here: avant drummer Cyrille digs deep into his Haitian roots with a folksy quintet. Hamiett Bluiett’s baritone sax walks a tightrope between traditional melody and free-jazz fire (matched by Alix Pascal’s elusive guitar), while Lisle Atkinson’s warm bass makes it nice & homey. Vocals on 1 & 12 add a nice touch.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11

1. 7:02 – a rolling good time: light, playful vocal, sax plays in and out
2. 7:03 – great percussion sets up catchy tune with odd harmony, bright guitar
3. 8:40 – gentle guitar/bass intro, hopeful sax, calm and ballad-like
4. 7:09 – Brazilian feel, but it fits: sax & guitar muse over deep percussion bed
5. 5:24 – festive Caribbean bounce, very loose: drums really go to town
6. 3:16 – relaxed urban atmosphere; warm breeze and sunshine
7. 6:02 – relaxed swing, played almost straight but gets increasingly offbeat
8. 2:55 – quick pace, poppish feel: strong bass solo & bouncy drum break
9. 4:18 – out-jazz: sax & guitar off balance but grounded by busy percussion
10. 6:28 – rolling jam recalls Africa and Haiti: strange guitar, braying sax
11. 3:18 – hot percussion discussion
12. 4:33 – old-school Haitian melody, happy vocal, sax squeaks pull it “out”
