CHRISTIAN TAMBURR: Places
self-released, 2012

MAINSTEREAM JAZZ – San Jose-based vibraphonist leads a nice little straight-ahead session. His elegant sound on the mallets is well matched by Eric Reed’s genteel piano and a solid rhythm section. Four original tunes, some old standards, and one each from the Beatles and Julio Iglesias.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 6, 8

1. 5:09 – Beatles cover: bright intro settles into a darker drive, tense solos
2. 6:18 – standard with a light touch; piano & vibes solos dance cheerfully
3. 6:55 – sweet gliding ballad: vibes really get flowing; optimistic piano
4. 6:47 – laid-back and cozy at first, then swinging in the solos
5. 6:09 – hushed ballad, open and haunting: vibes sound very nice here
6. 5:23 – solo drum intro; standard is quick-paced, light on its feet, swings
7. 4:09 – moody waltz: piano rises & breaks through the clouds
8. 4:51 – happy blues groove, lively vibes & piano swing away
9. 5:43 – romantic ballad starts slow, rises to a strolling pace, uplifting feel
