ASK THE ORACLE: Ask the Oracle!
Resonantmusic, 2011

AVANT-GARDE – This lumpy, exciting quintet out of Toronto goes heavy on the percussion and incorporates lots of “world” sounds into their mix – most of the guys double on a standard jazz instrument and something more exotic such as hojok (Korean reed) or guzheng (Chinese zither). Sometimes dives into wild noise (4,6,8) but other tracks stay just melodic and/or grooving enough to be accessible.

Try any. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6

1. 4:31 – stomping sound: blaring monotone sax & surf guitar over big drums
2. 6:08 – churning pseudo-gamelan metallic groove; slurred saxes slide on top
3. 6:14 – relaxed mbira (thumb piano) & asian flute, becomes gently chaotic
4. 1:46 – a quick burst: fast improv freakout
5. 4:49 – turbulent: low guzheng & breathy sax tones, atmospheric percussion
6. 5:48 – energy: sax & hojok fanfare blares over wild free-jazz percussion
7. 4:43 – strummed tanbour (lute) & wailing sax in slow-churned rhythmic slop
8. 5:39 – loud! bass intro; big bleating horn blasts take over and don’t let go
