Flesh Vehicle "Set Free" 7" ep 33rpm / Velocity Of Sound
One would think that a power trio of 3 stalwarts of the indie-rock scene (Steve Latnation, Jeremy Asbrock, Tom Pappas) would bring a certain level of expectations of a record that's SOMEWHAT special...yes? Well, this reviewer's kinda...underwhelmed. A mix of styles, but with traces of the bands these 3 were in, namely Agent Orange, Superdrag, and The Shazam. While I gotta say that I'm not impressed by this, please don't let my inflated opinions or my musical diatribes discourage you from checking this out, OK? I'm just not overly excited about it, nor violently dismissive of its merits, or I wouldn't have written this review. RIYL: early New Wave bands of the late70s-early 80s era, Social Distortion, The Members (UK), The Jam, any local bands (The Start/Roomates, The Instamoids, Jo Allen & the Shapes,) The Shoes, The Busboys, early Devo, plus a smattering of all those early 90s SubPop bands (too numerous to mention). No FCC, as far as is discernible.
side Alpha (A):
1) "What Is Is" This one reminds me of bands from the early 80s that never really were that big except for a hit or two, e.g. The Fools, The Knack, SVT, The Babies
2) "Fraud" Slowed-down 70s/90s shoe-gazer schlager, with a VERY close imitation of Mike Ness's singing style, augmented by the Foghat-like bass line and the Chapman & Chinn (legendary 70s producers) style of harmonies at the chorus. Ends cold.
side Omega (B):
3 "Set Free" Poppy-yet-sloppy aging-hipster mid-tempo attempt at something vague...at least, that's the end result, IMO. They're really going for that early 90s grunge-y, Teen-Anthem-Ballad-y (and you know how I love those!) feeling on this. Wow...has it really been 20 years ago since Nirvana was #1??
4) "Affluenza" Ouch. This one's a lot more faster, as if that would make this any better. Clash/Social Distortion-esque frontal assault. At least you can do those wacky, perpetual-motion 1960s dances to it, or simply pogo up 'n' down in the same spot & party like it's 1979. I tried to, anyway. Oh, and it ends REALLY cold, i.e. suddenly.
