CHICK COREA: Further Explorations
Concord Jazz, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Pianist Chick Corea pays tribute to one of his main inspirations, the great Bill Evans, in this live trio set pulled from a weeklong engagement at the Blue Note in New York. The Bill Evans Trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian (1959-61) was one of the most influential groups in jazz history, so it’s fitting that Motian takes the drum chair here. Eddie Gomez, who played with Evans for 11 years, is on bass. The music is a mix of Evans classics, standards and original material, and recalls Evans’ trademark collective spirit, with impressionistic ballads and rhythmically complex swinging numbers.

Fo’s Picks: Disc I – 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 Disc II – 1, 4, 5

DISC ONE

1. 5:25 – upbeat swinger, strong cross rhythms, real nice drums
2. 6:16 – impressionist piano, picks up an easy flow, strong bass presence
3. 7:19 – very sweet piano: a quiet, open ballad switches to light swing
4. 8:17 – solo bass intro; upbeat but mostly quiet trio waltz glides beautifully
5. 6:14 – lost Evans tune, previously unrecorded, floating & impressionistic
6. 6:20 – gently swinging standard, snappy drums, some tricky interplay
7. 5:44 – tight trio improvisation, upbeat and playful, drums take over
8. 8:57 – swirling piano lines drift into cobwebs, then a gorgeous ballad
9. 8:40 – Corea’s well-known tribute tune, dances but carries a serious tone
10. 10:25 – Thelonious Monk: deconstructed tune, gets playful and swinging

DISC TWO

1. 5:31 – bebop standard swings breezily, short but solid solos all around
2. 8:14 – slow, gentle and wide open: bowed bass solo, hushed drums
3. 6:52 – oddly march-like tango; bold intersecting strokes
4. 9:19 – abstract, bass-led intro; becomes a bright, shape-shifting tune
5. 8:12 – intro gets knotty & elaborate, settles into a thick emotional stew
6. 7:02 – upbeat jazz waltz, but a solid/heavy feel, melodic bass solo
7. 3:41 – solo bass intro to #8, played arco (bowed) and highly melodic
8. 9:13 – piano swirls for 2:00, then a nice trio stroll, thick bass break
9. 5:24 – upbeat and tricky: piano bounces around, elusive rhythm work
