1. 0:08: a robotic woman saying, “Testing, testing: 1, 2, 3”
2. 3:08: joyous, lots of harmonies. Really nice drum solo in the middle.
3. 2:51: some influence of surf-rock evident here. Tempo switches up a ton.
4. 3:06: changes tempo a bunch too – slow, languorous portions, and then ramped up guitars with fast vocals
5**. 4:01: really great melody. About being “in love again.” Gorgeous backing harmonies. In the middle there’s a more distorted psychedelic portion about how the rain can fall on you when you don’t expect it.
6**. 3:42: electronic blips and awesome electric guitar riff, with echoey vocals. Darker, heavier pop – but those sweet harmonies are still there. Awesome.
7. 3:59: Simon and Garfunkel-like harmonies. Slow, plodding, kind of boring.
8. 3:50: a little bit darker mood, with those echo-y vocals again. Chorus is not very interesting or hooky: “I’m in possession of a rubber soul.”
9**. 3:21: mixes elements of classic rock (think The Doors) with great harmonies into an interesting combination. Horns. It always sounds like it’s building to something, which is great – it’s not boring.
10. 3:43: sounds a lot like The Beatles, but with a somewhat-heavy guitar solo in the middle.
11. 3:12: somewhat dark. Commentary on modern society. Starts slow and downtempo then ratchets up and gets faster and faster as the vocalist struggles to keep up, then slow again, then faster…. etc.
12. 3:09: sounds like “Revolution.” Heavier than much of the stuff on the album. Discusses The Beatles and their demise.
13*. 2:52: starts out SUPER FAST. Then enters into a slower, Their Satanic Majesties Requests-era Rolling Stones sound.
14**. 3:18: “here come the 70s”: foreboding, “nobody cares.” Gorgeous.
15. 3:06: weird kid singing for first 20 seconds, then silence, then at 0:30 the actual song starts. If you’re playing this, you should start at 30 seconds into the song. Melancholy. Marching band drives. Cool.
