Album Review
Be Sharp

Buxton plays indie/folkie rock with psychedelic and experimental influences. The songs range from faux shit-kicking to sophisticated. Instrumentation is Americana-ish: including various guitars, banjo, mandolin, accordion, and organ, some occasional brass, and strings on one track. Interesting stuff; hard to pin down. The blurb on the jacket mentions Megafaun (which seems right) and Avett Bros (not even close).

No FCC issues

1 Mid tempo. Vague singing, banjo picking, rock guitar. Hidden in a murky mix. (3:25)
2 Mostly a whiny ballad, with high-register singing, backed by piano. Instrumental breaks (bridge & coda) are pretty cool with loud, countryish guitars. Perhaps ½ star. (4:06)
3 * Mid fast. Byrds-like country rock with a calypso sway. Fun harmony singing. Good electric guitar parts. Segues into track 4 for no apparently good reason. (3:33)
4 Mid tempo. Folk rock with an “aw shucks” hick element to it. (4:25)
5 Slow. Very mellow, whiny, emo, singer/songwriter. (4:05)
6 ** Mid fast. Folkie melody, shimmering sound, good harmony singing. (4:31)
7 * Mid fast. Alternating bits of mellow singing & hard-driving instrumental rock. (3:43)
8 * Mid tempo. Closest thing to a folkie singer/songwriter ballad. Acoustic guitar & banjo. Pleasing female harmony vocal. (4:12)
9 ** Slow. “High lonesome sound” folkie singing, terrific electric guitar, big organ. (4:49)
10 Slow, dreary song. Vocal is dull. Nice sounding, somber string ensemble though. (5:36)
