Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2019-02-26
Very dark experimental spoken word, harsh if not brutal noise. A document of an art project performed at SF City College May 8th 1996 that was accompanied by disturbing images smacking of autopsy/vivisection images (this was a “thing” in the mid 80’s, 90’s - it had to be done, like making the film “Salo”). FCCs within the spoken word parts and the content pushes the boundaries of good taste. Its my judgement that it would be okay if it were one or the other (safe harbor) but the graphic combo, while not technically “obscene”, pushes it over. Stick to the safe tracks (3, 5, 6), even in safe harbor. Artist is brethren from KFJC. For fans of Merzbow, Controlled Bleeding, NON, Day of Noise. The soundtrack to being hung from a meat hook and slowly murdered in a serial killer’s hidden basement. Dangerous Minds has an online description of a related performance that basically pushes all known ethical and legal bounds, involving self mutilation, IV drug use, and a loaded gun held to the temples of audience members, making a GG Allen show sound like the Jonas Bros in comparison.

Again: Only tracks 3, 5 and 6 are radio friendly at any hour (and they are excellent).

1) FCCs (10:22) echoey, harsh white noise laden, “4-28-96” voice spoken word, darkness about pain, suicide, torture, mental illness, disturbing taboo stuff (aren’t we all supposed to be perfectly well adjusted and shiney and happy on our razor scooters?) 2) FCCs (10:21) continuation of previous, comes out non-sequitur 3)* (10:21) harsh noise, lovely, messed up voiceover, more mental illness and general sickness, suicide, no FCCs detected 4) FCCs (10:21) out of previous but the FCCs fly immediately 5)* (10:12), no words, cool looped noise that stops cold after ~6 minutes, after some seconds of dead air a very disturbing high pitched noise with subliminal looping appears, this is the stuff of nightmares, now this is the soundtrack to a bad acid trip, ends cold 6)* (10:15) no words, heavy balm of harsh noise, a la NON’s Cruentas volptas
