Pinchas Zukerman leads Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra andVivaldi. Several of the pieces are concertos with soloists working with Zukerman in his multiple roles as violinist, violist, and conductor. The opening Handel s a brisk, energetic piece filled with woodwind colors. The Bach Concerto in C minor pairs the violin and oboe, especially effective in the second movement Adagio, which is like lyrical seaweed, intertwined. The Tartini Pastorale aims at conveying the country serenity of shepherds. Vivaldi conceived the B-flat Concerto for Violin and Cello to show off his principal players at the “Hospital” for orphans, so the two outer mvmts employ virtuoso passagework. Telemann had a good sense of the viola’s special colors, so his G Major Concerto exploits the instrument’s extreme ranges. The Bach 3rd Suite is most famous for its “Air on the G String” (track 16), often played as an encore or solo string ensemble piece. The other mvmts highlight brass fanfares.
