Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2004-10-07
Interesting mix, compilation of late 70’s-early 80’s bands, most of which represent well the limbo that many artists were experiencing being hung between the accessibility of tidal New Wave and their artful, abandonment of production/melody, sentiments. Unfortunately, a lot artists of the day ended up simply sounding like bad knock-offs of something good from the UK. Good news is that few of those bands are on this CD, most are really good and some are truly excellent, their rare tracks finally making it to a public forum (this is one of the only cds where you will find Culturcide). Cool document, great stuff.

1) skronky w/ sax, buried tom beat, nowave from a demo, beefheart comes to mind for sure
2) ¾ waltzy early LA art music, melodic, nice noise outro
3) glammier, east coast new wave art rock feel a la Television
4) lower fi art rock, old New Order feel maybe
5) simple low fi casio w/ guit, treated vocs, mellow and pleasant
6) simple casio, dark tone, instrumental
7) chill dark, 4AD This Mortal Coil feel
8) disjunct guit and beat, fuzzed vocs, “artwave”
9) new wavey, fairly minimal, keyboards and beat turns full on pogo, great lyrics
10) artwave, casio beats w/ melodic vocs but with noisy guit counterpoint
11) simple new romantic mix w/ dissonace
12) urgent rockin w/ slight twang
13) female vocs, slits/lilliput-like
14) saxaphone gives this a Laura Logic feel
15) cool dark feel, female electronoise rock pre-proto-electroclash
16) FCCs at end, near end, Culturcide track from Year One LP
17) upbeat synth rock, dark tone
18) dated, pretty 80’s sounding, synth feel
19) dark synth rock, near goth feel
20) brief synth track
