Album Review
Wicked Child
Reviewed 2006-03-21
Stanford band. Bouncy piano-pop. Channels Ben
Folds & Stevie Wonder. Has a very retro, but clean sound. They’re a fan of skipping a beat before choruses, can be obnoxious.

Not the best group, but a different sound from most indie bands today and I’m a fan of Stanford bands getting some exposure. FCC Clean. Picks: 3, 5. –Wicked Child

1. This track announces "we're a funky piano pop group and not afraid to show it." Retro sound -- reverbed male vocals with soprano accompaniment and wah'ed guitars. Repetitive chorus, it's a foot-tapper, though. (3:44)
2. Quiet, sensitive first minute. A minute of piano+vox. A minute of the the full band soaring. (3:22)
**3. Acoustic guitar opens. Heavy Ben Folds feel. Straightforward story lyrics. Subdued narrative verse vox, chorus are a stop-then thrash the piano and everyone go ba-ba-ba affair. (3:09)
4. Breathy vocals, synth line. Fake-out ending ~2:00. Fun and upbeat. (2:52)
**5. Super-retro Stevie Wonder intro. Pretty funky groove. Female backup singers in last minute. (3:54)
