EYVIND KANG - "Athlantis" CD (Ipecac)
This is KANG'S choral arrangement of the Latin text from "Cantus Circaeus" by philosopher Giordano Bruno. Bruno was burned at the stake and this sounds like a old church mass. For sure the music has a feeling of death and is classical. KANG has played with many, many people including MR BUNGLE, LAURA VEIRS, ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, and BILL FRISELL. The text is mostly a conversation between sorceress and her assistant. The sorceress is sung by JESSIKA KENNEY of BLACK CAT ORCHESTRA and MIKE PATTON (MR BUNGLE, FAITH NO MORE, FANTOMAS, ZORN, etc) sings the other main character. There is a full choir and on some pieces an curious ensemble made up of two trumpets, trombone and bass tuba. I don't know enough about classical vocal music to describe these tracks.
1. Sad, horns doing a dirge or mass intro.
2. Choir having a conversation between the men and the women. Short
**3. Guitar (? strings ?) and the male portion of the choir. Then the female portion joins in in almost a call and response. PATTON can be clearly heard for the first time.
**4. Very quiet beginning. Some very quiet vocal sounds from PATTON and building dramatic horns. Very eerie with PATTON making scary vocal sounds with a mumbling male choir. Female portion of the choir shows up and is loud and scary. Great track but I'm not sure the first half is loud enough for radio.
5. Sitar with PATTON doing a sort of chant in Latin? Ends with choir
**6. Begins with beautiful female vocals by I assume JESSIKA KENNEY. Vague Middle Eastern sounds in the singing. Almost all solo female vocals.
7. Horns sound the intro to the race.
**8. Rhythmic repetitive vocals and big choir sound.
9. Repetitive vocal sounds that gets busier and busier. Clear solo female vocals end the track.
10. PATTON'S singing that reminds me of SECRET CHIEFS 3. Quiet.
**11. Quiet, dark, eerie female vocals. Slightly discordant but at the same time ethereal or other worldly.
**12. Dark. After the death? Clear male vocals. The end of the mass? Demonic female vocals at the end.
Great stuff. -mph
