RALPH BOWEN: Due Reverence
Posi-Tone, 2010

STRAIGHTAHEAD JAZZ – Mainstream tenor sax with a solid tone; Bowen leads a fine quintet of first-call players through five original tunes paying tribute to his mentors. Guitarist Adam Rogers’ bright, ringing tone gets a lot of the spotlight; trumpeter Sean Jones doesn’t get enough. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but there’s some nice playing from all involved.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5

1. 6:37 – solo guitar intro; lyrical sax grows firm, falls back for gentle guitar
2. 7:05 – brisk, spinning theme: uptempo sax & guitar solos, rolling drums
3. 8:50 – upbeat stroll: sax strides over lightly swinging backdrop, guitar glides
4. 11:15 – midtempo: hopping melody and a nice relaxed groove for long solos
5. 8:32 – sneaky, oblique melody: elaborate sax & guitar tracery, elec. bass
