MARY HALVORSON QUINTET: Saturn Sings

AVANT-GARDE – Halvorson, who has made such a splash with her unique, glitchy guitar style over the past few years, adds horns to her band for the first time. That expands the palette with new layers and textures, and the compositions are all very interesting and full of quirky twists. Great stuff from all concerned, but it’s still that bizarre, broken-robot sound in Halvorson’s guitar solos that’s the main attraction.

1. 6:45 – winding melody: breaks apart in sax & guitar solos, but re-forms
2. 6:03 – solid trio sound: a slow, moody creep; guitar drifts into gloopiness
3. 4:48 – upbeat bounce gets weird; trumpet solo rides a river of lumpy gravy
4. 9:25 – explosions of noise interrupt mellow tune; drum solo, horn breaks are laid-back & melodic, guitar goes from calm to scream, messy end
5. 5:24 – rockish start, thudding rhythm as guitar slides gently to chaos & back
6. 8:48 – slower and heavy; sax reaches out, calming guitar & bass solos
7. 7:32 – trio slouch, chugs under very cool guitar; solos for bass/drums too
8. 7:26 – oddball pendulum swing: space guitar, jabbing trumpet, whirling sax
9. 5:39 – slow, tiptoe melody; guitar picks its way carefully, cool bass & drums
10. 4:29 – horns spin over clomping beat; drops down, then energy builds up
