Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2011-05-01
A radio version of a 1+ hour continuous track limited release CD, split into 4 tracks. Minimal, sounds, bells, female voice over/spoken poetry, spooky and gothy in the realm of Current 93, Coil. Project “started in 1995 as an offshoot of the English dark folk band Orchis and their interest in ancient Greek modal music, drone, magical trance states and krautrock.” Previous releases on obscure experimental labels, this one is on Belgian label Silken Tofu and comes to us from Oklahoma’s Anticlock Records. Great stuff, as is all Anticlock contributions to KZSU’s library. The bass player “once described his favorite instrument as ‘a delay system’”. Nuff sed.

Tracks 1,2 have a more poetic minimalism, 3,4 are more composed, attention

1) quiet fade-in (~15 secs, careful), minimal pretty guitar, bass, nighttime sounds, bells, voice, slow to evolve
2) quiet intro, nighttime sounds, bells, guitar is me textured, again long and relatively sparse
3) shorter than rest, starts similarly, midway picks up with drums and a beat, chill and dreamy, swirling tones, nice
4) very pleasant ambience entire 13 minutes, chill waves, with minimal voiceover
