Table & Chairs, 2011

AVANT-GARDE – With Cuong Vu on trumpet and Andrew D’Angelo on sax and bass clarinet, this engaging Seattle quartet blends free improv creativity with moody ambience, sometimes adding a burning sense of groove or the grinding power of metal. These guys sound equally at home playing mopey melodies or dissolving into ghostly squeaks and raw screams as they open it up, fall into the pocket or shred the music to splinters at will. Good stuff from the edge.

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6

1. 5:22 – steady high-stepping pace, thrusting theme, horns get squirrelly
2. 3:59 – fast, dodging intro; switches to funky groove, sax & trumpet spar
3. 8:08 – starts lonely with echoing horns, turns loud, grungy and screaming
4. 8:26 – slow, moody; drifts into creepy vastness, thickens in a bubbling stew
5. 6:59 – gloomy melody: quiet bass interlude, horns mope along, rises at end
6. 4:20 – goofy jazz vibe, wailing sax solo, rolling trumpet gets squeaky
7. 8:14 – slow and dark, drifts into fathomless void, rising anxiety is overcome
