Very soft, practically whispered miniatures for acoustic guitar and voice. These carefully written and effortlessly delivered songs are melancholy, calm, and slightly playful all at once. Everything is close mic'd and covered in tape hiss, and the atmosphere is deep and resonant. Something about it feels strikingly old. 1. *(2:52)—Starts downcast with minor chords, way downtuned guitar, gradually goes buoyant and falls back down.
2. (2:55)—Fingerpicking a little higher and gentler. Nice hummed backing vocals.
3. *(1:11)—Slightly bouncy, but in a spooky way. "The lilies on the pond / the pond is a broken metaphor / for a life and all its games / that I don't want to play."
4. (1:56)—More complicated structure with a few distinct parts. Descending refrain.
5. *(1:47)—Sweet and major key, though still mordant. It feels like this song could have come from a twenties torch song record.
