BILLY BANG & BILL COLE: Billy Bang Bill Cole
Shadrack, 2012
FREE JAZZ – Live concert recording of improvisational duets between the late violinist Billy Bang and Bill Cole, who plays a variety of Asian wind instruments. The tones of the reeds can be really harsh, grating and/or wobbly, so this is difficult listening, but the interplay is on a pretty high level. The tracks with didgeridoo or flute (1&4) are less noisy and more accessible. Watch out for applause at end of tracks.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 6, maybe 3
1. 10:12 – slow, meditative: steady didgeridoo drone, mysterious violin
2. 8:23 – melodic violin jostles against sour, whining sound of nagaswarm
3. 7:22 – violin and high-pitched, warbly suona spar and fly around each other
4. 5:31 – perky, abstract violin/flute dialogue, a few vocal interjections
5. 7:12 – unison theme, playful violin solo, shenai wails/scribbles, gets frantic
6. 3:25 – tension: violin & shenai dive right in and bounce off each other
[ Fo ] - March 2012
