Williams’ life has been fraught with hardships and here he sings about hard times. He doesn’t hold back - he tells it straight, whether it’s about racism, poverty or drug-addiction. The Canadian country band The Sadies back him up here - but it’s definitely not a country sound (except for a couple songs). It features both Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray, so it’s got that grungey, blues sound. It’s got A LOT of funk. R & B. Soul. Rock ‘n’ Roll. It’s gritty. It’s greasy. It’ll get in your head. In short, it’s stellar. FCC’s #3, 5, 8.
*My Favorites*: All.
1. (3:39) Mid. Funky, r & b groover w/ female backing vocals. Struttin’ shit, could be soundtrack on a blaxploitation pic.
2. (2:41) Slow / Mid. Dirge w/ haunting organ, plodding beat. Beautiful.
3. (1:46) Slow / Mid. FCC’s. Swampy, sultry, ethereal w/ hypnotic elec guitar, piano.
4. (2:57) Mid. Funky strut. Killer bass, killer beat, killer guitar. Killer.
5. (2:37) Mid. FCC’s. Rockin’ w/ that Jon Spencer sound, great beat, keys. Funky as all hell.
6. (3:26) Slow / Mid. Bluesy walk w/ harmonica, kick-ass guitar and drums.
7. (2:29) Slow / Mid. Old r & b styling, very slow w/ beautiful female backing.
8. (1:21) Mid. FCC. Garage-y, very Jon Spencer-ish.
9. (1:45) Mid. Big sound, rockin’ w/ cymbal strikes. Groovin’ and rockin’.
10. (3:06) Mid. All-out country number. Great percussion, fiddle, guitar. NIce.
11. (2:09) Mid. Upbeat old rockin’ country song. Steady, driving beat.
12. (3:04) Slow. Classic country sound. Beautiful duet w/ a female singer, great harmonizing.
13. (3:03) Mid. Funky groover, a bit of a garage sound. Killer.
