Shawn Lee – Synthesizers in Space
Reviewed by Sadie O., 6/4/12
I think I’ll call this “Future Retro” because I can and no one can stop me. Shawn Lee is a multi-instrumentalist (like, really, lots of instruments) originally from Wichita, now in London. He clearly has a love for oddball stuff from the 60’s and 70’, but he also likes fiddling with synthesizers. Lots of funky drums and bass, so I’m a happy puppy. Mostly instrumentals.
No FCCs detected. I like track 6 best, but I’m kinda freaky.
1. 3:27 ***slow hand drums with a certain amount of randomosity for 30 secs, then slow funky bass and scratchers, downbeat and hella slinky.
2. 2:33 **funky marching band drums, running bassline, electronics, a bit lounge-y, a bit psychedelic.
3. 2:04 ***super funky drum and bass, squeeebly electronics. Neet!
4. 3:07 **slow funky drum/percussion and bass, sploots. Gets kinda grandiose, in a nice way.
5. 4:12 *** hm… tense keyboards, loose and groovy drums. What does it all mean? Kinda 60’s psych, fer sher…
6. 4:01 *****Glam Rock! It’s totally Gary Glitter, but with squeebles! Ha ha! Vocals on this one, with lots of reverb. SOOOO Glam.
7. 3:55 ***downtempo soulful drum beat, and squeepy burbles. You can slow dance in your space suit.
8. 2:37 ***bippety boppity happy mod-a-gogo, and scronches.
9. 3:57 **laid back and cool-jazzy, but with synth breaks.
10. 2:56 **slow rockin’ beat with very lounge-y synth. Very relaxed.
11. 3:42 **groovy uptempo Latin percussion, frug-a-mambo, baby! (Not sure how you frug when you have six legs and rows of suckers…) um. Things are starting to get scary. Mommy?
