Rachmaninoff, S. Cello Sonata, Op. 19, Etudes-Tableux, op. 39, Danse Orientale, Lied / Steven Doane, cello; Barry Snyder, piano
Label: Bridge, 2012
Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) composed his cello and sonata chamber works for his cellist friend Anatoly Brandukov. The Sonata, composed just after his 2nd piano concerto and premiered by the two friends, begins with a melancholic Lento intro, then a passionate first subject and a regretful second subject. The 2nd mvmt Scherzo has a flowing central portion. The beautiful 3rd mvmt is lyrical. The 4th mvmt is bravura style with a vivacious first subject. a romantic second subject, and an ardent, exciting Coda. The Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39, for solo piano, the 2nd set in this form, were written shortly after the death of Scriabin, of R’s father and of his teacher, Taneyev. This may explain the set’s pervasive references to the Dies Irae, the Roman Catholic Chant for the Dead, present in many of R’s works. They are virtuoso pieces, intensely rhythmic, with contrasting and often climactic middle sections.
1. Danse Orientale (4:38). Piano & cello. Lyrical, haunting, almost Hassidic melody
2. Cello Sonata in G minor I. Lento - Allegro moderato (12:31)
3. Cello Sonata in G minor II. Allegro scherzando (6:42)
4. Cello Sonata in G minor III. Andante (5:03)
5. Cello Sonata in G minor IV. Allegro mosso (10:36)
6. Etudes-tableaux I. Etude No. 1 in C minor (3:06). Tumultuous seas.
7. Etudes-tableaux II. Etude No. 2 in A minor (6:48). Melancholic, elegiac.
8. Etudes-tableaux III. Etude No. 3 in F-sharp minor (2:58). Brilliant.
9. Etudes-tableaux IV. Etude No. 4 in B minor (3:30). A rapid march, scurrying.
10. Etudes-tableaux V. Etude No. 5 in E-flat minor (4:34). Somberly passionate
11. Etudes-tableaux VI. Etude No. 6 in A minor (2:34). Red Riding Hood & the Wolf.
12. Etudes-tableaux VII. Etude No. 7 in C minor (5:17). Funeral in the rain.
13. Etudes-tableaux VIII. Etude No. 8 in D minor (3:24). Fresh, lyrical
14. Etudes-tableaux IX. Etude No. 9 in D major (3:38). Dramatic, bells toll, showers fall.
15. Lied (2:08). Piano & cello. Brooding, melancholy.
