New York composer, musician. Two tracks, the first very long (1 hour +), ambient looped soundscapes. Eno’esque in its hypnotic dreamy repetitiveness, but an element of creepy instilled. Possibly because the music is a reflection of “paradise lost”: this was made in his process of digitizing 1982 analog tape loops, then discovering that the loops themselves were disintegrating before his eyes, the iron oxide falling from the plastic polymer, the “music was dying”. It became clear to Basinski they represented his youth, memories, a “pastoral American landscape”. Years later he and his neighbors witnessed the horrors of the events of 9-11 from their rooftops in Brooklyn, sitting in lawn chairs while listening to these recordings. The first track, the long hypnotic piece, while lush and beautiful, captures a certain sadness. Lovely yet dark. The track at face value can be likened to playing an Eno/Budd composition on repeat in an empty industrial warehouse while a lone piece of machinery plods on distantly. This is truly beautiful stuff, very powerful. I urge you to play it (and to read the very poignant liner notes that I plundered above).
1) (1:03:33) see above
2) (10:56) ambient dreamscape, more radio friendly length, lovely lovely stuff.
