BEN GOLDBERG: Subatomic Particle Homesick Blues

AVANT-MODERN JAZZ – Ben Goldberg, a top Bay Area clarinetist who’s led or played in a long string of innovative bands, has another great quintet on this inside/outside date. It’s a bit surprising at first to hear mainstream sax star Joshua Redman along for the ride, but he sounds pretty darned comfortable in Goldberg’s oddly-shaped sonic world, an improv-based space colored by blues, klezmer, and swing.

2. 5:36 – laid-back bluesy theme, clashing conversation, lumpy bass/drum duo
3. 2:52 – sax/clarinet duo: they spin in close but not identical orbits
4. 4:01 – bright and jaunty with solo space for happy sax & off-kilter drums
5. 4:39 – love the rhythm section & winding sax solo in this slinky march
6. 5:56 – slow drag with nice horn harmony, beefs up to bold, boozy swagger
7. 4:50 – drifting horn trio slips into a brooding & mysterious quintet
8. 7:35 – down-home bluesy feel on this old country tune, with tattered edges
