MILES DAVIS QUINTET: Live in Europe 1969
Columbia/Legacy, 2013

POSTBOP/FUSION – In 1969, Miles Davis blew the world's collective mind by going all-out electric into the new world of fusion, first with “In a Silent Way” and then with the earth-shaking “Bitches Brew.” These recently unearthed live sets, recorded right around the time of the “Bitches Brew” sessions, capture Miles in his archetypal state: leading a quintet, exploring new realms and expanding the definition of jazz.

The Quintet heard here – Miles, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette – was never officially recorded. Although live sets have turned up before (from the end of their time together), here we get them at an early, transitional stage, when Miles was just starting to evolve his new sound. Discs 1/2 come from back to back nights in July 1969, while Disc 3 comes from November. So we get to hear these ideas first as works in progress and then firmly established.

Disc 1 is low-fi and grungy with a raw feel. Disc 2 is cleaner and the set has more variety. Disc 3 has the most polished, dynamic music, and acoustic piano on several tracks really changes up the quintet’s sound.

All tracks worthwhile!
Fo’s Picks: Disc I – 3, 5, 6 Disc II – 2, 3, 6, 8 Disc III - 2, 3, 4, 6

Tracks tend to lead right into each other. DJs: fade-in & fade-out!

DISC ONE

2. 6:06 – drum whirlwind & fanfare; blistering trumpet & sax solos, muddy keys
3. 9:10 – drunken, bluesy feel: trumpet stretches & squeals, great soprano sax
4. 13:53 – older tune, swings thru the looking-glass, stand-out keyboard solo
5. 11:38 – mysterious vibe: Miles declares, faster for Wayne, Chick runs free
6. 8:59 – standard: spare duet intro, but quintet speeds way up, solos just roll
7. 9:24 – upbeat rolling groove, fractures under wild sax, keys pull it back in
8. 4:15 – slow and mysterious: dragged-out horns and slouched rhythm

DISC TWO

2. 6:18 – drum whirlwind & fanfare; blistering trumpet & sax solos, mad keys
3. 10:37 – fast, hard groove: tight quintet sound and flaring solos, tough drums
4. 2:55 – standard ballad: slows way down for trumpet/keyboard duet
5. 8:28 – bold, very aggressive: solos wail over hard beats & rushing grooves
6. 8:47 – drunken, bluesy feel: similar to Disc 1 version but cleaner; wild keys
7. 13:35 – swift walking groove run through the wringer: bass/drums get solos
8. 8:51 – relaxed mysterioso groove, but restless energy pushes and twists it
9. 3:33 – dragged-out horns and slouched rhythm, more blaring than Disc 1

DISC THREE

2. 14:39 – dark, brooding; then powerhouse solos in a loose uptempo groove
3. 9:20 – sinister trumpet, drum tornado pushes sax, piano calms it down
4. 10:03 – relaxed mystery: more elegant/straightforward than Disc 2 version
5. 8:03 – bold tune, more cohesive than Disc 2 version but the ending is lost
6. 6:18 – swirling and forceful: drums really push trumpet, soprano sax digs in
