The music on this CD was written in a span of 20 years, during which the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the Russian Empire collapsed around the composers’ lives. Antonin Dvorak’s (1841-1904) Humoresques illustrate moods, or “humors.” Each is in ABA form, and all are tuneful and use classical harmonies. Sergei Prokofiev’s (1891-1953) Visions Fugitives were originally titled, “Things Flying By.” As the track notes below indicate, most are whimsical; all have Prokofiev’s slightly biting harmonies. Bela Bartok’s (1881-1945) Bagatelles are the first works in which he left behind 19th cent. Romantic influences. Each piece explores an “agenda,” whether tonality, handling of folk melodies, pianistic texture or piano technique. They range widely in the images evoked. Everyone knows the tune Dvorak used in the last track.
