This jazz trio album is Colligan’s 24th (!) as a leader, and it features jazz giants Jack DeJohnette (drums) and Larry Grenadier (bass). The tracks are all originals written by Colligan and, for the most part, they are modern (with surprising chord changes, etc.) but not really crazy or “out.” The sound reminds me of the Brad Mehldau trio—these guys are all masters of their instruments playing original tunes with a light touch. The sound is almost a bit too clean/sterile for me, but if you like the starred tracks, you might like the rest too.
No FCC detected.
(7:48) — Mellow track with nice long intro
(6:50) — Up-tempo swingin’ track with punchy rhythmic piano solo and short-and-sweet bass solo
(8:25) — Light bossa-inspired groove
(9:08) — Starts with bass intro with an accordian-sounding solo (on an electric keyboard)
(7:32) — Mid-tempo piece with somewhat dischordant melody. Drums featured at the end
* (3:14) — Slightly haunting piano ballad
(3:34) — Bashing dissonant chords moves into free/play jazz
* (7:57) — Sweet ballad with back-and-forth interaction between bass and piano during the solos
* (6:28) — Soft sweet mid-tempo tune featuring nice bass solo crescendos to big dramatic ending
(8:38) — Soft soulful groove
