The title Tales From the Grand Bazaar tells you much of what you need to know about Bombay Dub Orchestra, as the bazaar is where cultures meet and intertwine, with Istanbul’s bazaar being the grandest. The band builds with that in mind, pulling sounds and textures from places like India, Turkey, Macedonia and Brazil, while blending them into a mellow electronic vibe that can be quite mesmerizing. Lots of sitar, hand drums, and strings. Very nice.
~Mayjahn~ Picks: 1, 4, *5* FCC clean
*1 (6:13) Midtempo Indian sitar, hand drum, bunch of other instruments, and whirling spacey synths. Nice grooves.
2 (7:16) Slower, heavier drums, very dramatic. Fem crooning but no words.
3 (5:43) Fun sitar & strings play together with some male vox
*4 (6:04) Sexy, sometimes slow, & super spacey. Lovely fem vox. Delicious!
**5 (7:59) Out of left field. Loungey bass alongside Indian chorals and very groooovy beats + strings.
6 (5:08) Slow keyboards, synths, and little noises. Dreamy.
7 (6:43) The dub emerges in this one! Slowed down with interesting stinging synths. Sitar.
8 (8:28) More dub. Drums, strings, and shimmers. Slightly stoned sound to it.
9 (5:47) Strings, wind, lush waves of sound, and some sprinkling noises-- an ethereal end to a lovely album
