CATHERINE RUSSELL: Bring It Back
Jazz Village, 2014
JAZZ VOCALS – Another excellent set of vintage blues, trad-jazz and swing from Russell, one of the best interpreters of this material around. She’s backed by a very fine 10-piece band. All FCC clean, of course.
All tracks good! Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11
1. 3:54 – nice easy-swinging blues, simple and appealing
2. 2:31 – bright bounce with an old-timey sound, nice guitar & tasty trumpet
3. 4:09 – great laid-back tick-tock swing, slinky vocal and cool sax break
4. 3:10 – brisk, hopping swing: get up and dance, you jitterbug!
5. 4:41 – oh yeah: cool blues, excellent band sound, sly vocals
6. 2:40 – good-time strut rides on bass & tambourine
7. 3:56 – sweet li’l romantic sway (written by Russell’s father, Luis)
8. 2:39 – upbeat Tin Pan Alley bounce, cute & friendly, just vox/guitar/piano
9. 5:24 – ooooh… soulful midtempo blues, small group w/organ... so nice!
10. 3:08 – good-time blues stomp w/organ, big sassy vocal
11. 3:31 – relaxed Fats Waller stroll, just voice & piano
12. 3:14 – cute swing bounce: snappy band and playful vocal
13. 5:02 – standard melancholy ballad: expressive intro, then big-band sway
